When talking about Bắc Lệ Temple, one cannot overlook Chầu Bé — a revered saintess closely connected to the Tứ Phủ spiritual belief. According to legend, Chầu Bé was the daughter of Mẫu Thượng Ngàn who descended to Bắc Lệ to help the people by exorcising evil spirits, healing illnesses, and blessing bountiful harvests. After her ascension, locals built a shrine at the site where she appeared.
At Bắc Lệ Temple, the altar dedicated to Chầu Bé is located to the right of the main sanctuary and is splendidly adorned. Devotees believe that sincere prayers to Chầu Bé will bring blessings, especially concerning love and children.
Every year, many devotees from across the country come to perform rituals known as “hầu đồng” (spirit mediumship) to invite Chầu Bé’s spirit. These ceremonies are mystical and enchanting, with colorful costumes and lively chầu văn music. In moments of spiritual possession, mediums embody Chầu Bé, singing, dancing, and bestowing blessings and good fortune to pilgrims.
The story of Chầu Bé Bắc Lệ is not only a folk legend but also a distinctive feature of the Mother Goddess worship, recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. Visiting here offers deeper understanding of Vietnamese spiritual beliefs, where historical and mythical figures intertwine with local faith.
