Prayers and Offerings at Bắc Lệ Temple – What You Need to Know

One of the beautiful aspects of pilgrimage to Bắc Lệ Temple is the careful preparation of offerings and the sincere prayers recited by visitors. Worshippers often prepare either vegetarian or non-vegetarian offerings depending on the altar and their prayer intentions.

Vegetarian offerings typically include betel leaves and areca nuts, fresh flowers, sweets, steamed sticky rice cakes, and sweet soups. Non-vegetarian offerings may include boiled chicken, Vietnamese pork sausage (giò chả), and white rice wine. The important thing is to arrange the offerings neatly, cleanly, and with heartfelt devotion.

Each altar has its own specific prayer texts. The main altar, dedicated to Chúa Thượng Ngàn – Mẫu Thượng Ngàn, is usually prayed to for peace, health, and favorable conditions in life. Other altars such as Cô, Cậu, Sơn Trang have their own specific prayers aligned with the worshippers’ wishes.

Many visitors also present flowers and burn votive papers according to traditional customs. However, it is important not to overindulge in offerings or superstitions. What truly matters is sincerity and respect for cultural heritage.
