The Unique Architecture of Bắc Lệ Temple – A Testament to Time and Culture

Bắc Lệ Temple is not only a sacred place but also an architectural masterpiece deeply rooted in traditional culture. Constructed mainly from lim wood and covered with fish-scale patterned tiles, the temple complex harmoniously combines folk carving artistry with the style of ancient Vietnamese communal houses and temples.

The temple gate is designed as a “tam quan” style with curved roofs and pillars intricately carved with dragons and phoenixes. Passing through the gate, visitors enter a spacious courtyard shaded by ancient trees, where altars and guest houses are located. The main sanctuary forms the heart of the complex, dedicated to Mẫu Thượng Ngàn and other deities.

Inside the sanctuary, the beams and columns are elaborately carved, with each detail carrying profound spiritual significance. The ceiling is decorated with calligraphy panels and statues, creating a solemn and ancient atmosphere. The layered, curved roofs resemble a lotus blossoming amid the mountains of Lạng Sơn.

Additionally, the temple includes auxiliary buildings such as the cô and cậu towers, Sơn Trang shrine, and various smaller altars scattered around. The entire Bắc Lệ Temple architecture vividly illustrates the harmonious integration of faith and traditional Vietnamese folk art.
